May 7th Meeting
Speaker Fiona Patten MLC
‘Voluntary Assisted Dying Law’
Fiona spoke on the passage of the ‘Assisted Dying Legislation’ in the Victorian Parliament in 2017. Not long after entering Parliament one of her major aims was to do everything she could to achieve this goal. A Parliamentary inquiry was set up and she also was part of a group of parliamentarians who travelled to Canada, Switzerland, America and the Netherlands to investigate assisted dying laws in these countries. After 98 hours of debate and 40 amendments, the Bill was finally passed on the 28th November 2017. Members of Parliament were able to vote with their conscience. The Bill comes into law on June 19th 2019.
Thanks to Fiona for providing us with a very interesting and detailed account of the complex process that took place to enable this Bill to become law. We are very appreciative of her coming to speak at our Club.

May 28th Meeting
Phil Hill and Kim, ‘Solar Smiles’ Update
Kim and Phil provided us with a detailed description of the dental work they are doing and the places they are doing it in East Timor. Phil and Kim work in schools in the sub-district of Maubisse which is a very remote village with very few facilities. They aimed to work with 1000 children but it is more like 1400. There are some dental nurses who have had some training but they are actually not qualified to do the prescribed work so Phil and Kim are mentoring and training them while they work. Phil provided us with an energetic demonstration of how he works, and how time consuming it is without knowledgeable volunteers. This was to emphasize the need, and to encourage Rotary members to volunteer to come over to East Timor. They can assist with minor and administrative tasks. Phil and Kim are also trying to teach the children about preventative dental health care and volunteers could assist with this also. The added help would be a great support and enable Phil to work more efficiently doing his dental procedures. Phil and Kim are doing a great job.
June 2nd Footy Lunch Fundraiser
Thanks to all the Rotarians who brought along family and friends to this fundraiser. We also thank Dave O’Neill who volunteered his services and entertained the crowd. It was a most enjoyable day. Also thanks to Peter Hille for doing a great job as MC on the day.
As it is the last month of the Rotary year we would like to say, ‘congratulations and thanks’ to Joy for a very successful and enjoyable year during her Presidency in 2017-2018.
