Rotary Foundation Month
October 1st Meeting
Visit by DG Bronwyn Stephens
Congratulations to Jess Hiew as our newest member of Fitzroy Rotary Club. DG Bronwyn Stephens was visiting the Club on the night and assisted President Steve in inducting Jess.
DG Bronwyn commented on the many community involvements that Fitzroy Rotary members take part in. Assistant DG Joan Robison also attended the meeting. DG Bronwyn spoke of her long term involvement in Cambodia and the impact it has had on her as a Rotarian. She also spoke of her work with Rotary House in Blackwood Street North Melbourne which provides accommodation for families with children having bone marrow transplants. DG Bronwyn also promoted the multi-district Conference in Melbourne which will bring four districts together from 15th -17th February 2019.
October 14th ‘Go For Gold’ Scholarship Presentation
Once again the ‘Go for Gold’ scholarship presentation was held on the 14th October. Peter Hille acted as MC and did an excellent job. Ann Davie liaised with Carol Cooke to assist with the setting up and serving of meals. Menka arranged the flowers for the tables. Anthea and Sue also assisted with serving. Thanks to all the helpers who made the day run smoothly. In the forefront of the above picture is Jenny a recipient of one of the scholarships. Her dream is to be the first person with multiple sclerosis to swim the English Channel. Her award will go to help her to prepare for this.
14th October ‘Step Up for Down
Thanks to Barrie and Pat for organizing the ‘Step up for Down’ BBQ at Princes Park and their work on the day. Thanks also to Tony, Joy and Albert who helped on the BBQ.
15th October Rotary Club of Fitzroy AGM
President Steve held a successful and prompt AGM, which was followed by a pleasant evening of fellowship.
Tiwi Island Girls Football Team
This year 11 young women and 2 leaders from the Tiwi Islands attended the 2018 ‘Around the Campfire Cup’ in Adelaide. While in Adelaide the girls also participated in work experience and connected with youth programs at the Port Adelaide Football Club, as well as taking part in the football/cultural festival. Fitzroy Rotary Club along with the RAAF, helped to financially cover the cost for the girls to attend. Fitzroy Rotary’s sponsorship provided the girls with their sports t-shirts, and partly covered their accommodation. The girls were very proud of their new sports tops. Thanks to Sue Moses-Critchley for leading and following through with this terrific initiative. As you can see below the girls did a special photo to show off their Fitzroy Rotary signage on their t-shirts.
Meeting 22nd October
Speaker Graeme Willingham
Graeme introduced his book, ‘Not Bad Thanks’. The book title came about from the days when he and a friend travelled on public transport to work. People would often greet each other by saying ‘hello’, but the responding, predictive answer would come back, ‘not bad thanks’. In those days Graeme and his friend formed a social basketball team, which they are still playing in. They called the team, ‘not bad thanks’. Graeme’s underlying message focused on the durability of friendships formed through sport.
