Chris McGeachen spoke about the work he does at the Atherton Gardens with youth in his role as a Community Police Officer and (Yarra Blue light). Chris spoke of the different sports he runs each term and how this these sports programs link with Fitzroy Rotary’s BARSS Scholarship awards. He also acknowledged the Australian Catholic University (ACU) students who assist to run programs him each week. Chris was accompanied by Riyadh Aden one of the young men he has mentored over the years. Riyadh explained how Chris has helped him so much, and that he has been a father figure to him and to many other young men who live in the flats. Since that meeting Peter Hille & Ann Haynes have met with the Centre for Multicultural Youth who have committed to supporting the BARSS program across 6 local sports clubs which will further support Chris McGeachan’s programs.

Saturday Dinner 16th February

A number of members attended the Rotary Conference held in Melbourne on this weekend and from all reports it was most successful and there were a number of excellent speakers. On the Saturday night 14 members attended a dinner organized by Anthea. It was a most enjoyable night and thanks to Anthea for arranging this.

Meeting 18th February

Jenny and Michael spoke of the banks relationship with Fitzroy Rotary and its commitment to the local community. The Clifton Hill/North Fitzroy Bank has returned $2.3 million to the local community. Jenny also spoke of her previous connection to Rotary and her appreciation of the fact that she had a wonderful experience as a Rotary exchange student in America. Michael commented on his commitment to community banking and that he comes from a family who have worked for the Bendigo Bank for many years. Both Jenny and Michael emphasized the fact that most of the staff have been in their roles for a number of years and that they maintain a strong commitment to community banking. Discussion centred around strengthening the partnership of the club and the bank through scholarships and other awards as well as a Polio Plus Picnic.

MegaSwim

22nd & 23rd February

A big thank you to all members and friends of Rotary who volunteered their time to assist over the 24 hour period. Special thanks to Ann Davie, Pat, Barry and Tony who put in so much work to ensure this runs so well each year. Michelle and Mandy helped out with food preparation and service. We thank them for the time and effort they contributed. Also Ann please pass on the Club’s appreciation to the ladies from your retirement village who came up in the mini bus and put in many hours work on Saturday. At this stage we are not aware of the monies raised. WE also thank the Community Bank for their $1400 sponsorship of the catering.

Monday 25th February

Thanks to Peter Hille for organizing a fellowship dinner at the Terminus Hotel. All seemed to enjoy the evening and it gave us an opportunity to frequent another venue in Fitzroy. The idea is to try out some other venues for our social activity nights so if anyone has any ideas please let Peter know.
